Fitted bodysuits, superheroes, and dance costumes
Use 4-way stretch spandex. It moves with the body and recovers its shape all night. Nylon spandex has more sheen and a swimwear hand; poly spandex prints hold vivid color. For scale, snake, or mermaid skins, foil-printed and iridescent spandex creates the effect without any painting — our Venom iridescent snakeskin stretch velvet is the single most-ordered costume fabric in the store.
Royalty, vampires, and anything dramatic
Use stretch velvet. It photographs richly under low light, forgives fit because it stretches, and reads expensive from stage distance. Two to three yards makes most capes; fitted gowns need three to four.
Animals, monsters, and mascots
Use faux fur or minky. Long-pile shag fur builds werewolves and Wookiee-style suits; short-pile minky (including dimple dot) is softer, lighter, and better for full bodysuits you'll wear for hours. Cutting tip: slice only the backing from the back side with a razor blade so the pile stays long at the seams.
Armor, corsets, and sci-fi
Use faux leather vinyl or chainmail mesh. Foam-backed faux leather holds armor shapes and takes weathering paint well. Chainmail mesh knit gives you a medieval or sci-fi metallic look at a fraction of real chainmail's weight — and it sews on a home machine.
Showgirls, mermaids, and stage sparkle
Use sequin fabric. Stretch-base sequins are easiest for fitted pieces; flip-sequin "mermaid" fabric adds an interactive element kids love. Line it — sequin backs are scratchy.
How much fabric do I need?
- Cape: 2–3 yards
- Fitted bodysuit (adult): 2–2.5 yards of 58" stretch
- Full-skirted gown: 4–6 yards
- Mascot/creature suit: 4–5 yards of fur plus 1–2 yards contrast
Buying by the yard means you get one continuous cut — order slightly over rather than seaming pile fabrics.
When should I buy?
Costume fabrics sell through in October. Order by late September for stress-free shipping and time for a test fit. We cut and ship worldwide from Los Angeles daily.
